Donor-advised giving allows individuals to contribute to a dedicated fund, receive an immediate tax benefit, and support charities over time.
We can help you to:
1. Set-up a Giving Fund:
A Giving Fund is a sub-fund, within our ACNC registered Public Ancillary Fund which allows you to participate in where the funds are distributed, without the governance headaches. You decide what the fund is called and it can be promoted to your networks.
2. Establish a Corpus:
You get an immediate tax deduction for any money you put in the Giving Fund but it can be released over time. We will invest the funds, in accordance with our Investment Policy and then make donations from the income. We need to distribute at least 4% of the corpus each year. If the income is greater than that we can give more away or let the corpus build up for greater impact in the future. If appropriate, the corpus can also be reduced over time, bringing forward the impact of your giving.
3. Advise the trustees how to Distribute.
It is the responsibility of the trustees to determine how to distribute gifts from the Foundation including any giving funds. This is to ensure that recipients meet appropriate governance and outcome objectives. The trustees will seek your advice on how you would like your giving fund allocated. Distributions will be made to:
- Our Charity Partners or Endorsed Charities
- Any ACNC registered charity with DGR Item 1 status
4. Get the family involved.
Have you thought about how the nest generation will carry on your philanthropy? We can help you to hold family meetings to consider which charities to support. And we can facilitate engagement opportunities directly with the charities you are helping, including immersion trips overseas.
Fees & Reporting
We provide quarterly updates on what your giving fund has supported, how much is left to give and how much it’s earning.
We do not charge fees. All our overheads are covered, so every dollar donated can go where it’s needed most.
We do however ask that you consider allocating some of your giving to Seeding Hope Ltd, our charity supporting vulnerable people experiencing poverty, homelessness and distress in Australia and around the world.
Due Diligence
We undertake due diligence on all charities receiving funds from us. The amount of work we do is based on the amount given:
- Level 1 – up to $10,000 – Desktop review of registrations and other information available online
- Level 2 – up to $30,000 – Interview the charity and obtain supporting documentation
- Level 3 – over $30,000 – Ensure they comply with the ACNC Governance Standards and Payton filters
Investment Strategy
The Public Ancillary Fund Guidelines do not allow Giving Funds to be invested separately, so they will be invested in aggregate in accordance with the Foundation’s overall investment strategy.
The intention of the Foundation is to invest in a way that, where possible, protects capital while still producing a strong return.
In order to achieve growth in the corpus taking into account the required Minimum Annual Distribution of 4%, the Foundation will target overall returns between 5%-9%. This will necessitate a tolerance of medium risk levels which would tend to exclude highly speculative investments.
The trustees have a preference for investing in diversified private credit managed funds as they provide a relatively high rate of return for comparably low-medium risk and do not have the inherent volatility of the listed equities markets. This is an area of expertise for the trustees.
